Lodge Photography
Elephant Hide is a romantic boutique guest lodge situated on the northern banks of the Knysna Lagoon, overlooking Belvedere Estate and the surrounding natural beauty of Knysna. With its tranquil setting, sweeping lagoon views, and warm hospitality, it’s a lodge designed for guests to slow down and truly unwind. It’s also a marvelous venue for lodge photography.

The Brief
Following a recent interior refresh, the lodge required updated photography to reflect the new look and feel across their website and social media platforms. The brief was to capture both the interiors and exteriors, showcasing the relaxed atmosphere, thoughtful luxuries, and the unique sense of place that Elephant Hide offers. I would also create video content to complement the stills and add a sense of movement and flow to the spaces.

The View
One of the highlights of the lodge is the spectacular vista from the rooms and pool deck. The afternoons often end with surreal sunsets over the lagoon. Knysna’s distinctive forest-filtered light combined with its coastal atmosphere makes photographing lodges here both a challenge and a privilege.

The Job
With the luxury of shooting over two days, I planned the schedule carefully: focusing on room interiors during the day, and capturing the restaurant, entrance, and exterior spaces in the softer light of early mornings and late afternoons. I also focused on the restaurant entrance, highlighting a beautifully crafted newly added wood-carved table.

Challenges in lodge photography
I photographed the rooms without additional styling, as the owner wanted them represented realistically and honestly. I blended natural and ambient light to create a warm, inviting feel, while still maintaining an authentic sense of space. One of the key challenges was balancing the bright outdoor light with darker interior spaces. I ensured the lagoon views remained an integral part of the visual story. The aim was to help potential guests imagine themselves there, striking a balance between authenticity and a premium aesthetic.

Every lodge presents its own challenges, and Elephant Hide was no exception. Many of the rooms share a similar layout, so differentiating them through alternative angles and detailed shots was essential. Ongoing maintenance work in certain exterior areas required close coordination with management, and the extreme summer heat meant moving strategically between indoor and outdoor locations throughout the day.

Photo and Video
Stills and short video clips work particularly well together in lodge marketing. While photographs capture atmosphere and detail, video brings a sense of movement and spatial flow that helps viewers better understand how a space feels. Video can also counterbalance the use of wide-angle lenses, which sometimes make interiors appear larger than they are. It presents a more natural sense of scale through motion.

I delivered the final content for use across the lodge’s website headers, booking platforms, Instagram, Facebook, and email marketing. In total, I supplied over 100 edited images along with short cinematic video clips, all optimised for web use. My goal was to help Elephant Hide stand out even more in an increasingly competitive market.

I thoroughly enjoyed this shoot. The friendly staff, beautiful rooms, mesmerising sunsets, and the vibrant energy of Knysna all contributed to a rewarding experience. Receiving positive feedback from lodge owners and knowing that my work supports their marketing efforts is always deeply satisfying.
I work with boutique lodges across the Garden Route and beyond. If you’re a lodge or guesthouse owner looking to translate your vision into compelling visual content, feel free to get in touch.
